Dictations in Karelian and Veps to take place on April 20

On the Karelian and Veps Written Language Day, April 20, the annual educational event "Dictation in Karelian and Veps" will take place. This year, it is aligned with the Year of Unity of the Peoples of Russia and is dedicated to the 95th anniversary of birth of the Karelian poet Vladimir Brendoev. The text will be read out to the participants in all dialects of the Karelian language and in Veps. One of the readers is Alexandra Rodionova, Senior Researcher at the Institute of Linguistics, Literature, and History KarRC RAS.
The Dictation in Karelian and Veps is an annual awareness-building event held on the Karelian and Veps Written Language Day. It is organized by the Ministry of Ethnic and Regional Policy of the Republic of Karelia. The event will take place from April 20 to April 26 at 74 offline venues specially designated both across the Republic of Karelia and in other regions: Tver, Leningrad, and Vologda Oblasts. In Karelia’s capital city, the dictation can take place at 11:00 AM on April 20 at the Petrozavodsk State University.

Participants will listen to a text articulated in all major dialects of the Karelian language (Livvi, Karelian Proper, Ludic, and the Tver dialect) and in Veps. This year, the excerpt for the dictation will be taken from a prose work by the Karelian writer and poet Vladimir Brendoev, whose 95th anniversary of birth will be celebrated in September.

Traditionally, the text for the dictation in Ludic Karelian was prepared and will be read out by Alexandra Rodionova, a linguist and Senior Researcher at the Linguistics Section of the Institute of Linguistics, Literature, and History KarRC RAS. The Balto-Finnic research school operating under the section’s umbrella is Russia’s most significant center for the study of the Karelian and Veps languages. The scholar's main research areas are socio- and corpus linguistics. She has been participating in the Dictation for about ten years.

– It’s a wonderful tradition – to have such an event on the Karelian and Veps Written Language Day. Having participated for many years, I see that it’s becoming increasingly popular, and the number of venues hosting the dictation grows. Importantly, it is held not only in Petrozavodsk but also in other settlements within as well as beyond the republic, – noted Aleksandra Rodionova.

For those unable to take the dictation in person, a remote format will be organized: video recordings of the dictated texts will be subsequently posted in the event’s official group on the VK social network.
